Ruby Dell Stone-Leavell

Ruby Dell Stone-Leavell affectionately known as “Big Mama”, was born on Saturday, November 5, 1927 to the late Samuel David Stone and Essie Mae Hogan in Dickson, Tennessee. Ruby was the youngest out of nine children and was nicknamed “Baby Dell.”

Ruby accepted Christ at an early age and was an active member at Oak Grove Baptist Church; where she was a long-standing member of the church. Ruby was deeply devoted to her faith and was a steadfast presence in the congregation, a member of the choir, missionary, and mother of the church.

Ruby had a green thumb and could make anything grow under her care. She was known for her canned preserves, especially her grape jelly and pies, along with her chow-chow. Ruby was a known activist and remained abreast of current events.

Ruby married Arthur Leavell on June 22, 1945 in Springfield, TN. Ruby was a devoted mother to James A. Leavell (deceased) (Carol), Indianapolis, IN., Walter L. Leavell (Pam), Jamaica, Shirley A. Rice (Larry) Gary, IN., Robert A. Leavell (Debra) Burns, TN. Regina E. Youngblood (deceased), Madisonville, KY. Julia Drone, Madisonville, KY, Lloyd D. Leavell (Maria) Louisville, KY, Hugh R. Leavell (Cynthia), Little Rock, AR, Jon A. Leavell, Madisonville, KY, Linda J. Hodges (Robert) Madisonville, KY, and her bonus daughters Azilee Thomas, Jacinta Leavell, and Lisa Leavell-Buckner. Ruby was a mother to many and loved to be surrounded by her family especially her grandchildren which covers four generations who number over 200.

Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, eight siblings, and five grandchildren.

Her legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering faith will continue to inspire us all. She is survived by her loving family and the countless lives she touched.
