Rose Marie Blackwell-Carter was born September 8, 1934 in Uniontown, KY to Brown Foster Sr. and Christabel (Taylor) Foster. Rose accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Methodist Church in Uniontown, KY. After moving to Evansville, she became a member of Cleaves Memorial C.M.E. Church. At the age of 18, Rose married Robert Blackwell and from that union six children were born-Samuel, Sabrina, Tana, Patrick, Robert II, and Melba (“Penny”). Rose was married to Robert until his death in 1971.
On August 5, 1985, she married Earl Ray Carter. Throughout the years they enjoyed attending family outings, fishing, and traveling to baseball games. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Over the years, Rose’s hobbies have included: Sewing, making and refinishing furniture, winemaking, and making preserves. She also loved playing Spades, putting together jigsaw puzzles, and working crossword puzzles. Most of all, Rose had a love for watching old westerns and “Law and Order”.
Rose was a member of the Jolly Ten Social Club for many years. This was one of the first African- American, all-women, Social Clubs in Evansville. She was also a lifetime member of the Goosetown Neighborhood Association.
Rose departed this life on Sunday, December 11, 2016 at 12:11 p.m. surrounded by family and friends. She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband Earl; daughter, Sabrina (Michael) Cawthorne; sons, Patrick and Robert Blackwell; step-children, Lorraine, Earl Jr., Bridget, Gidget, Josh, Rachel, Rickey, and Mary; brothers, Brown (Willie Mae) Foster Jr. of Uniontown, KY and Oscar “Hank” (Martha Sue) Foster of Terre Haute, IN; 12 Grandchildren (which includes: Maria and Patrick whom she raised); 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Services are Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 12:00 noon at Memorial Baptist Church with visitation from 11:00am until service time. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Condolences may be left at
