Otis Edward Northington, age 70, passed away peacefully on April13, 2016 (his mother’s birthday) at home.
Otis was born February 18, 1946 in Evansville, Indiana as the only child to the late Otis William and Marie Northington. He attended Chestnut-Walnut Elementary School and Lincoln High School and graduated in 1964 from Central High School where he excelled academically and in basketball. He attended Delaware State University for a short period of time before returning home to care for his ill mother.
Otis was an avid sports fan and talked sports to anyone who would listen. This included his love for the Indianapolis Colts and Peyton Manning. He coached basketball for St. John’s grade school who won the CYO Championship. He also coached for St. Anthony’s CYO, Indiana Bell’s Women’s Slow Pitch Softball, as well as the Unique and Express Women’s Softball teams. Otis was a dedicated follower of the Evansville Otters.
Otis was a member of the Catholic faith. He worked for City Highway Garage where he retired due to his illness. He was a member of Teamsters Union #215. Otis was a life member of the NAACP and was very active in the Democratic Party. His cherished possession was a photograph of himself with President Obama.
Otis leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Velena Diane Taylor Northington; sisters-in-law, Brenda (Homer) Hale of Evansville IN and Peggy Simmons of Indianapolis IN; brothers-in-law, William P. (Glamour) Taylor of Evansville IN and James (Margaret) Taylor of Terre Haute IN; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends.
A celebration of Christian life will be held Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 12:00 noon at St. Benedicts Cathedral, 1328 Lincoln Avenue, Evansville IN with visitation beginning at 11:00am until service time. Father Theodore G. Temple officiating. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery in Evansville. Arrangements entrusted to Mason Brothers Memorial Chapel. Condolences may be left at
