Oscar Hubert Bennett, Sr., son of the late John T. Bennett and the late Dora Belle Mitchell Bennett, passed on February 24, 2018 at the age of 89. He was born on May 9, 1928 in Charleston, South Carolina.
He attended Avery Normal Institute in Charleston and graduated from South Carolina State University in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts.
Oscar served honorably in the United States Army for twenty years. He fought in the Korean War and the Viet-Nam War. He earned the Combat Infantryman Badge 2nd Award, and campaign and citation ribbons from Korea and Viet-Nam.
Upon retiring from the military, he worked for George Koch & Sons in Evansville, Indiana as a member of the National Sheet Metal Workers Union until retirement. Oscar enjoyed team bowling, fishing, and wood working.
He is predeceased by six brothers: John, Thomas, Frank, Theodore, Nathaniel, and Milton; and one sister Margaret Bennett Mays.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 65 years: Bettina C. Bennett of Evansville, Indiana; one daughter: Regina Bennett Monday (Gary) of San Antonio, Texas; one son: Oscar H. Bennett, Jr. (Pamela) of Manassas, Virginia; and one granddaughter: Lillian Grace Bennett also of Manassas; six nieces and one nephew.
