Mae Jean Lester-Townsend was born August 25, 1941, to the late Peter and Addie Lester in Evansville, Ind. She passed away Thursday, March 23, 2023, at her home.
Mae Jean attended Lincoln High School and the Area Industrial Vocational School. She was a faithful volunteer for thirty years at the Potter’s Wheel in the Distribution Department. Mae Jean was a life-long member of Cleaves Memorial CME Church, where she was very active in her youth, serving on the Junior Usher Board and participating in the Christian Youth Fellowship. Later in life, she worked in the kitchen, helping to prepare food for dinners and special events.
Mae Jean had several talents, one of which was being a seamstress like her mother. She made many of the clothes for her three girls and loved making dolls in the likeness of the Cabbage Patch Doll, making their clothing and accessories as well. Mae Jean was also a good cook, working in several restaurants in Evansville.
In addition to her parents, Mae Jean was preceded in death by her only son James Guest, Jr.; brothers: Peter Lester, Jr., Johnnie Matchem, and Carl Matchem.
Left to cherish her memory, daughters: Gwenene (Stanley) Lane of Louisiana, Rhonda (Gregory) Alston of Virginia, Callie Jefferies of Indianapolis, In; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 5 great great-grandchildren; sisters: Gwendolyn Lester and Andrea Watkins both of Evansville; brother: Rudolph Lester of Oakland, CA.; a host of other family and friends.
