Larry Eugene Jones, affectionately known as “Muddy,“ was born on April 11, 1953 in Madisonville, KY to his loving parents Daisy Evans and Clinton Smith. His journey began in a small town that would witness the unfolding of an extraordinary life marked by resilience, achievement, and unwavering dedication.
Larry graduated from Madisonville North Hopkins high School, where he played basketball and football. Larry's passion was on the football field, where he left an indelible mark as an outstanding football player. His exceptional skills and dedication earned him the prestigious title of All-American, a recognition that highlighted his exceptional talent and commitment to the sport.
Larry's legacy was built at MNHHS. It was further immortalized when his jersey number (36) was retired and honored with induction into the Hall of Fame. These symbolic gestures served as a testament to the impact he had on the game and the lives of those who had the privilege of witnessing his athletic abilities.
Larry attended the University of Kentucky and Murray State University before returning to his roots in Madisonville. He worked for the Board of Education and was assistant football coach leaving a mark on countless young minds and aspiring athletes.
Larry will be remembered not only for his athletic ability, but for the kindness, mentorship, and inspiration he shared with everyone fortunate enough to know him. As we bid farewell to a beloved father, son, brother, grandfather, uncle, coach, and friend, let us carry forward the lessons of resilience, dedication, and community that defined his remarkable life. Larry's spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who were touched by his warmth and generosity.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Rosie Young, Peggy Jones; brother, Marion “Bro” Jones. He leaves to cherish his memories a daughter, Thasha Jones; son, Larry Jones II; brother, Calvin (Rhonda) Ikeard; sister, Jerri (Marion) Stevenson; 8 grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were touched by his warmth and wisdom.
His memory will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
