Joyce Tate Johnson, 80 of Memphis, Tennessee passed away on Tuesday August 21, 2018 in Evansville, Indiana. Born August 15, 1938, Joyce was a retired employee of the Memphis City School System where most of her years was served at Cummings Elementary. She had a passion for education and inspiring young students. A product of the Memphis City Schools, Joyce was the Hamilton High School Valedictorian of the Class of 1956. She was also a graduate of Philander Smith College, Little Rock, Arkansas and received her master’s from Memphis State University (now identified as the University of Memphis). Her son, John A. Johnson, III was serving as her caregiver during her illness. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.
The family will receive relatives and friends beginning Friday August 31, 2018 from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm at R.S. Lewis & Sons Funeral Home 374 Vance Avenue, Memphis, TN. The Beta Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will lead the Ivy Beyond the Wall Service Friday August 31, 2018 during that time.
A Celebration of Life Service at 11am, Saturday September 1, 2018 at Centenary United Methodist Church 584 E. McLemore Ave. Memphis TN.
Ms. Johnson will lie in state two hours prior to the service at the Centenary UMC, where she was a faithful member serving as a former Trustee, Choir Member, Cubmaster, & with the United Methodist Women. Interment will be in New Park Cemetery, Memphis, TN. Evansville arrangements by R. Mason Brothers Memorial Chapel.
