John W. Bennett was born on October 16, 1939, in Augusta, Georgia, to Edna Bennett and Nathan Walker in Richmond, Georgia. He was raised by his foster mother, Inez Jones. John professed his hope in Christ at an early age. After relocating to Evansville, he joined Little Valley Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Robert Brown. Later, he joined New Hope Baptist under the direction of Rev. Rabon Turner, where he was a devout member, attending Sunday School and participating in other activities. Throughout his life, John has been very active in the community. He was a counselor at the Black Coalition, President of the NAACP, worked for the Community Action Program of Evansville (CAPE), owned his cleaning service, and was a volunteer DJ at the University of Evansville’s radio station. John had many hobbies, such as chess, fishing, and dominos, but his true love was Jazz Music. He was also an avid reader. John was preceded in death by his parents and foster mother. He leaves to cherish his memory his children Rev. Ardena Bennett-Johnson (Kenneth) and Steven Young; Godchildren LaShawn Cooksey and Edward Terry; caregiver Annie Tunley; and a host of friends.
