Jewell Stafford

Jewell Thomas Stafford, 82, of Madisonville, KY passed away on Thursday, September 14,
2017 at Baptist Health Hospital in Madisonville, KY.

After graduating from Rosenwald High School, he joined the army and served until 1958. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, Jewell moved to Owensboro, KY where he met and married Loretta, his wife of 55 years. After the passing of his mother, Jewell moved his family back to Nortonville, KY, where he joined Lively Stone Church of God. Jewell was a devoted husband and father. He tirelessly served his church and community for over 60 years until his illness prevented him from physically continuing. He was a faithful and dutiful servant who served the church in many capacities over the years from bus driver to Deacon. In 1977, Jewell was awarded the honor of Kentucky Colonel for his and his wife’s service to the foster care system. He loved coaching and mentoring kids. He coached many teams and hundreds of kids over his 30 plus years of coaching.He touched and shaped the lives of everyone he came into contact with.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother Deacon William and Fanny Stafford; two daughters: Monica Mason and Rosemary Morris; son: John Stafford; five brothers: Junior, Don, Phillip, Damon and Frank and one sister: Helen.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 55 years Loretta, daughters: Felicia Cates of
Madisonville, KY and Alicia Wesseler of St. Louis, MO.; four grandsons: Jewell S. Stafford ( Danielle) of Madisonville, Korey Mason of Earlington, KY, Kobe Stone of Mt. Vernon, IN and Zachary Cates of Evansville, IN; five granddaughters: Govanna Cissna of Henderson, KY, Shawnae Shackelford ( Spencer) of Bowling Green, KY, Loretta L. Stafford of Lexington, KY, Shaielle Stafford of Richmond, KY and Allihya Cates of Evansville, IN; three sisters: Ada Smith (James) of Louisville, KY, Carolyn Louden ( Richard) of Louisville, KY and Margaret Floyd (George) of Jesup, GA; one brother Raymond Stafford (Carolyn) of Miami, FL; stepmother: Carrie Lee Stafford of Nortonville, KY; stepsisters: Ruby Scisney ( Forrest) of Las Vegas, NV, Phyllis Scott (Alphonso) of St. Louis, MO, Eva Pugh ( Walter) of Detroit, MI, and Joyce Bourne of Detroit, MI. ; stepbrothers: Clarence Boyd (Diane) of Georgia and James Boyd (Stephanie) of Detroit, MI; and a host of nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and friends.


Homegoing services will be Wednesday, Sept 20 at 1 p.m. at Lively Stone Church of God in Nortonville, KY with visitation on Tuesday, September 19 from 6-8 p.m. also at the church. Interment at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Madisonville, KY. Mason & Sons Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements. Leave condolences at www.masonbrothersfs.com .
