Grace Elizabeth Johnson

November 11, 1920 — January 11, 2019

Grace Elizabeth Johnson, 98, departed this life on Jan. 11, 2019 at Columbia Nursing Home. Born in Evansville to the late Dr. Clem Reed and Nadean Carter Reed, Grace was educated in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation attending Third Avenue Grade School and graduating from Lincoln High School.
On October 1, 1949, Grace married the love of her life; Andrew Johnson, Jr. Together, they founded Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in January of 1974. They enjoyed 47 years of marriage working diligently to help the church grow and prosper until his death in 1996.
Grace worked for many many years at Salm’s Department Store as an elevator operator. She later worked for the CAPE Foster Grandparents Program until the age of 93. Even in sickness, Grace made an impact on others wherever she went. The nurses at St. Vincents Hospital took a particular liking to her as she reminded them of their mothers.
In addition to her parents and husband, Grace was preceded in death by her son Walter Gillum, granddaughter Tiffany Russell, grandson Aaron Gillum.
Left to cherish fond and loving memories are five children: Michael Gillum, Andrea Russell (Terrence), Eric Johnson, and Karen Johnson; grandchildren: Tracey, Kristen, Leslie, Jessica (Kenneth); 8 great grandchildren.
