Eva Ann Hines Phipps, of Evansville, peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was 97 years old.
Born on July 10, 1927, in Hartford, KY, to the late Eva and Larkin Hines, Eva Ann accepted Christ at an early age. She was a devoted member of Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church for over thirty years, where she served as a Sunday School teacher, was an active participant in the Circle of Faith, and was a long-time member of the Mother’s Board. Prior to that, she was a member of Greater St. James Church for more than twenty years, where she also taught Sunday School and sang in the Senior Choir.
Eva Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eugene Phipps, with whom she shared more than fifty wonderful years of marriage. She was the youngest and last surviving of seven sisters: Pauline, Carrie Lee, Minnie, Marie, LaVerna, and Ethel.
Before dedicating herself to her family, Eva Ann was a skilled cage welder. She cherished spending time with her loved ones, enjoyed cooking and trying new recipes, and loved reading the Bible and preparing her Sunday School lessons. She also found joy in watching classic Westerns like Gunsmoke and Bonanza. A passionate traveler, Eva created lasting memories with her children on trips to England, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
Eva Ann was a loving and devoted mother to ten children: Susan Wesley (the late Terrance) of Owensboro, KY; Ruth Ann McCray (the late Donald) of Minneapolis, MN; Ronald Eugene Phipps of Evansville, IN; Dora LeBlanc (John) of New York, NY; David Allen Phipps of Plano, TX; Michael Phipps of Evansville, IN; Timothy Phipps (Elizabeth) of Garland, TX; the late Matthew Phipps; Mark Phipps (Kim) of Indianapolis, IN; and the late Will Phipps.
She was a proud grandmother to Sheronda McCray (Minneapolis), Anthony Phipps (Monica) of Owensboro, Jason Phipps (Brittany) of Owensboro, Christina El-Saden (Jordan) of Los Angeles, and Katar Phipps of Garland, TX. She was also a cherished great-grandmother to Felix, Gemma, and Jaden. She also leaves to cherish her memory many other loving family members, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Eva Ann’s unwavering faith, boundless love, and steadfast commitment to her family will leave a legacy. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
A special thanks to her eldest son, Ronald “Ronnie,” for becoming her devoted caregiver.
