Eunice Marie Garnett, age 94, peacefully transitioned from this life on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born on March 14, 1931, in Evansville, Indiana, Eunice was the beloved daughter of Douglas W. Lander and Lillian A. Lander. She was one of six siblings: Douglas Jr., Theodore “Ted,” Margarite, Eleanor, and George. All preceded her in death except her dear brother, George.
Eunice attended Lincoln High School in Evansville, where she met the love of her life, James C. Garnett, Sr. They were united in marriage on March 28, 1949. Together they built a beautiful life and raised five children: three sons, Raymond Eric “Icky”, James Cecil Jr. “Junnie”, and Michael Jerome, and two daughters, Mary Kathleen “Kat” and Ellena Charleen.
Eunice devoted over 25 years of service as a nursing assistant at Deaconess Hospital before retiring.
Her faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was the oldest and longest-standing member of Grace Lutheran Church (now Grace & Peace Lutheran), serving faithfully for more than 85 years. Her ministry work included the Ministry of Help, Mission of Grace, Food Pantry, Palm Sunday Brunch, church cleaning team, and Vacation Bible School.
She found great joy in traveling, crocheting, baking for her family, and spending time with her grandchildren. Each visit brought her immense happiness.
Eunice was also preceded in death by her husband James Sr., her son Raymond, and her daughter Mary.
Eunice leaves to cherish her memory: sons, James Jr. (Bridgett), Michael; daughter Ellena, all of Evansville; grandchildren, Valerie Irving (Douglasville, GA), Carlos Garnett, Sr. (Tara), India Pettit, Michoe Johnson (James), Jordan Garnett, Zachary Garnett, Bridjunnie Garnett, Michael Garnett II, Isaiah Garnett, and Salena Garnett; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; several great great-grandchildren; her brother, George (Wanda); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who loved her deeply.
