Emma “Tee” Bowles, a native of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, was born on August 2, 1934, to her loving parents, Thurman and Martha Rutherford. During her teenage years, Emma's life took a new direction when her mother remarried and relocated from Goodlettsville to Evansville, Indiana. In Evansville, she became a devoted member of the New Hope Baptist Church, under the guidance of the late Dr. W.R. Brown, Sr. It was also in Evansville that she met and married Elder Herbert Russell, resulting in the birth of six wonderful children.
Emma's life took a challenging turn when she and Herbert divorced, leaving her as the sole provider for their six young children. Nevertheless, she remained unwavering in her commitment to her family, tirelessly working in various menial jobs to ensure the well-being of her children. She held them close and fostered strong bonds among them, displaying immense sacrifice and dedication.
In due course, after her children had grown, Emma found love once more and married Willie B. Bowles, who sadly preceded her in death. In 2016, Emma made the decision to relocate to Michigan to be closer to her daughters. Her days were filled with simple pleasures, such as watching TV, enjoying music, shopping, and cherishing moments with her beloved family.
Emma was known for her loving concern for her children and grandchildren, reminding them to be cautious whenever they ventured out. Every departure from the house was accompanied by her signature questions: "Did you turn off the stove?" and "Be careful." Her natural wit and humor were endearing to all who knew her, leading some to believe she had missed her true calling as a comedic actress on stage or in films. She would playfully sing "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" and burst into laughter afterward. In her youth, Emma used to grace audiences with her gift for singing gospel songs.
On January 27th, 2024, Emma departed from this earthly realm, leaving behind cherished memories in the hearts of her loved ones. She is survived by her six children: Herbert Russell (Unhui), Deborah Ingram (Judge), Gregory Russell, Laura Russell, Martha DuBose (Reney), and Donald Russell (Melody); grandchildren: Tameca Robertson, Bruce Robertson, Brandon Russell (Elizabeth), Jason Russell, Ju Seami, Ju James, Britni Stampley (Christopher), and Gregory Russell, Jr.; and 11 great-grandchildren including: Deborah Robertson, Demari Robertson, and London Stampley.
Her absence will be deeply felt, and her memory will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
