It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Duanita Gayle (Mitchell) Smith, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished member of a large and loving family. She departed peacefully on Sunday, November 19, 2023 surrounded by the warmth of family.
Born on November 9, 1953, Duanita Gayle (Mitchell) Smith dedicated her life to the joyous roles of motherhood and family matriarch. She leaves behind a legacy of love and strength that will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
In celebrating Duanita Gayle (Mitchell) Smith's life, we remember her as a beacon of warmth, compassion, and resilience. Her legacy lives on through the memories shared by those who had the privilege of calling her family.
She was preceded in death by siblings: William Mitchell and Faye Hastie.
She is survived by her three devoted children: Carman Baker, Anthony (Tiffany) Smith, and Chad (Sarah) Lovan who were the center of her world. Their families expanded over the years, and Duanita Gayle took immense pride in her seven grandchildren: DeArius Fleming-Smith, Mariah Wilson, Dana Smith, Octavia Smith, Justice Smith, Anjane Smith, and Bryce Lovan along with thirteen great-grandchildren; mother: Juanita Dortch Harris; brothers: Kenneth Scott and James Mitchell; and sister: Mary Drake. Her nurturing spirit, wisdom, and unconditional love enriched the lives of each generation.
Beyond her immediate family, Duanita Gayle (Mitchell) Smith leaves behind a vast network of nieces and nephews—nineteen in total—whose lives were touched by her kindness and generosity. Her familial bonds were a testament to the importance she placed on maintaining connections and fostering a sense of unity.
May She rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love that she so freely gave during her remarkable journey on this earth.
