Dorothy Ruth Ricketts Carter was born May 7, 1928, to the late William Ricketts and Marie Osborn Ricketts. She transitioned to her heavenly home on October 16, 2024, with her daughter, Deborah, son-in-law, Philip, grandson, Philip Courtney, and granddaughter, Heather Marie, by her side.
Dorothy accepted Christ at an early age. She was a valiant spirit that God chose to experience life here on earth and was faithful in studying God’s Word. She was rooted and grounded in love for all. She walked in Jesus's footsteps and demonstrated love, peace, and forbearance.
She was number six of twelve children. Each one of her siblings was very special to her, and they consistently communicated by phone and through visits. She will always be remembered for her love, loyalty, and kind heart for her siblings and their children.
She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1946. In her senior year, she attended Evansville College in the evenings. After graduation, she joined her late sister, Jeanette Ricketts Mangum, in Gary, Indiana. She married Lemuel J. Carter, and to this union, three children were born: Deborah E. Carter Raspberry, Lemuel Eugene Carter, and Mark Elliott Carter.
Dorothy retired from the Gary Public Library after twenty-one years of exemplary service. She was recognized and cited for her loyal, faithful, and dedicated service to the various branches of the public library.
She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter, Deborah E. Raspberry; son-in-law, Philip C. Raspberry; grandson, Philip Courtney; granddaughter, Heather Marie; granddaughter, Felicia Clark; brother, Gilbert Ricketts; sisters: Shirley Rowlett and Constance Neal; a dear childhood friend, Ms. Mary Etta Taylor; and four generations of nieces and nephews.
