Claudia Bell (Higgins) Hay, 85, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 5, 2023, with her family by her side. She was born in Henderson, Kentucky, on May 30, 1937, to Reverend Willie Edward and Roberta (Carter) Higgins, Sr.
She accepted Christ at the tender young age of 11 in 1948. She was a lifelong member of the Holy Tabernacle Church of God in Christ. She served as Church Secretary, Hospitality President, Prayer and Bible Band President, Home Mission President, Sunshine Band Teacher, Usher, Y.P.W.W. President, Pastor’s Aide Worker, Choir Member, and Church Mother. Claudia was all about family; she cared for and tended to her husband, Maurice W. Hay, Sr., and her four children: Maurice Hay, Jr., Carol, Tonja, and Joette Hay.
Claudia loved her immediate, extended, and church families; she inspired them all. She was a homemaker and a wonderful mother and would do anything for you in her power if it was for the good. She loved to crochet, sew, quilt, cook, and care for others. Claudia was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Her famous statement she liked to use to encourage others was: “You need an education, a driver’s license, and most importantly – you need God.”
Claudia’s essential love that superseded everything else was her love for Christ. She would not let "anything or anyone" stop her from serving the Lord. God loved her more and chose to call her home to be with Him.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Reverend Willie Edward and Roberta Higgins, Sr.; only grandson: Maurice W. Hay III; sisters: Roberta Higgins, Mattie Cousins, and Rachel Bowman; brothers: David, Mose, Marvin, Freddie, Reverend Ira Charles, Sterling (Duck), James (Mule), and Willie Jr. (June) Higgins.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years: Maurice W. Hay, Sr.; son: Maurice W. (Becky) Hay, Jr; daughters: Carol, Tonja, and Joette Hay, all of Henderson, KY; granddaughter: Maurisha Hay of Chattanooga, TN; sisters: Velma Brown of Evansville, IN and Pearl (Donald) Banks Sr. of Henderson, KY; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, adopted sons and daughters, and friends.
Special love for Hay-in-Laws; Ira (Elise), Addie Hayden, George (Patricia), Katherine (Silas) Woolfolk, Cornelius (Charisse), Leslie (Les), and Larry (Angie).
