Charles R. Dixon was born on November 19, 1925, to the late John and Bettie Lou Dixon. On Monday morning, November 11, 2024, an exquisite flower nourished for 98 years was transplanted into a higher ground. This beauteous flower's title included a loving father, granddad, brother, uncle, and friend.
He confessed Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at an early age. Charles was a devout member of Phillips Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church member until his health failed him. He dearly loved the members of his church.
Charles graduated from Dunbar High School, where he played left tackle on the football team. He was an avid baseball fan, and the Chicago Bears were his favorite team, “win, lose, or draw!” After High School, he was a water boy when they were building Camp Breckenridge in Morganfield, KY. When that job ended, he went to work at the Greyhound Bus Station in Evansville, IN, as a cook. He later joined the military and enlisted in the United States Army, where he attained the rank of sergeant. He was a proud World War II veteran. Once his military tour ended, he returned to Sturgis and met and married the love of his life, Dorisie Newcomb, on July 15, 1946. Six beautiful children were born to this unionp00 v o;o olooo; ;o; . They had been married for 51 years. This was when he began his 44-year career in the coal mine industry. He worked at Camp 2, Popular Ridge, DeKoven, and Hamilton Mines and retired in 1989.
He savored life’s journey while sitting on his back porch. Everyone from the community was on that porch talking to Charlie. He enjoyed sharing his military and coal mines journey with his family and friends. Charles had wisdom that he didn’t mind sharing with others. Charles loved his family.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three children, Virgil, Connie, and Cynthia Dixon; his brother, John Henry Dixon; and his sisters, Carrie Dixon, Adriana Dixon Johnson, and Elsie Eli.
He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Jerome R. Dixon (Maria) of Henderson, KY, Cecelia M. Dixon-Kirkwood (Ronnie) of Sturgis, KY, and Charles R. Dixon, Jr. (Donjea) of Fayetteville, NC; brothers, James Dixon (Picola) of Cleveland, OH, Gertie Wallace of Cleveland, OH, Nathaniel Dixon of Champaign, IL, Thomas Dixon (Gwen) Champaign, IL and Beluah Collier (James) of Decatur IL; grandchildren, Ashyia, Veronica, Kyle and Charles III, great-grandchildren, Nia, Antria, and Janiah; and a host of other family and friends.
