After a protracted and intense battle with Cancer, Camilla Washington Greer succumbed and transitioned to be with the Lord on May 31st in Millington, TN at the age of 55. She leaves behind her loving husband: Otis Greer; daughter, Zya'Lexia Greer; sons: William Brown, Tyris, Eric, and Jerrell Greer; and father: Joseph Washington.
Camilla was born on December 3, 1967, in Evansville, IN to Joseph Washington and Barbara Washington, who preceded her in passing. She grew up in a big and loving home with her seven siblings: Selwin, Eric, Lenora, James, and Parvetta, who survive her, as well as her brothers Donald and Phillip who also preceded her in passing. In school, she excelled, graduated from Bosse High School, and then went on to continue her education at Bishop College where she graduated with honors and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. After completing college, she went on to be a Substance Abuse Counselor, shortly after which she was diagnosed with cancer for the first time. This led to her cutting her career short. During this period, Camilla underwent several cancer treatments and finally entered remission. In 2005, Otis and Camilla welcomed a daughter into the world. Three months after the birth of her daughter, Camilla's cancer returned. While dealing with her own sickness, she was dealing with her extremely sick daughter. Because of her daughter’s sickness, Camilla and Otis relocated to Memphis, TN after which she underwent another round of treatments. After almost a year, she entered remission again. After being cancer free for 8 years Camilla decided to go back to college at Ashworth University where she earned an A.A.S degree. During her time at Ashworth, she noticed her health declining again. In July of 2014 she was diagnosed with cancer again but this time a more aggressive and rare form of it. Camilla was determined to not let this cancer win so she stayed busy. While undergoing treatment she was approached with a job position as a teacher at Creative Life Prep where for the first couple of years she taught the 4th and 5th grades. She quickly fell in love with the job as she grew connections with the staff and students. She progressed and began to teach Math and Science to middle and high school students. Her bright smile created such a loving and light-filled environment which made it so easy for her students to love her. She became more than a teacher to her students, and she began to look at them like they were her children, only wanting the best for them. She used her job and her students as motivation to keep pushing through her aggressive treatments.
Unfortunately, in 2017 she was told that her cancer had spread to her liver. Even with the bad news she never gave up faith and she continued to push on and teach until she absolutely couldn't anymore in 2020. With her cancer now being so aggressive and hard to treat Camilla decided to try some of the strongest treatments possible. After battling cancer for 14 years her health started to decrease massively in 2023 but still, she refused to give in without a fight. In her final months, she was still so full of life. She always kept a positive mindset and a smile on her face. In the closing moments of her battle with cancer, Camilla never stopped fighting. She was determined to stay brave, fearless, and true to herself. She leaves this message with us all " Do not cry because I am gone. Smile because I am in a better place and no longer hurting. Smile and remember all the good times and memories we made together."
